Zadok - Part 5 - Zadok’s Son Follows His Father’s Example

“‘Are not Zadok and Abiathar the priests with you there? So it shall be that whatever you hear from the King’s house, you shall report to Zadok and Abiathar the priests. Behold their two sons are with them there, Ahimaaz, Zadok’s son and Jonathan, Abiathar’s son; and by them you shall send me everything that you hear.’ So Hushai, David’s friend, came into the city”

2 Samuel 15: 35-37


By following King David’s word, to return to Jerusalem with the ark of the covenant, Zadok was now in a position to further serve David and help restore the kingdom to him. We continue to see in Zadok’s life that king, covenant, and priesthood came first and were purposefully interwoven.


Now that Zadok was in place, David counseled his friend, Hushai, to return to Jerusalem as well, and glean what he could from Absalom’s court. Zadok’s son, Ahimaaz, would relay information back to David. In this we see the beginning of “the sons of Zadok” (Ezekiel 40:46), following in their father’s loyal-to-God, covenant, and priesthood footsteps.


Sure enough, Hushai heard of a plot to attack David and, after counseling Absalom against an immediate attack, as Ahithophel was urging, he went straight to Zadok, saying, “send quickly and tell David, saying, ‘Do not spend the night at the fords in the wilderness, but by all means cross over, or else the king and all the people who are with him will be destroyed’” (2 Samuel 17:16). The message got to David via Zadok’s son. David and his men then crossed the river, saving their lives, which ultimately led to Absalom’s death the following day, and David’s return to His throne in Jerusalem.


When you and I are loyal, and remain loyal, to our King and High Priest, Jesus Christ, and to the “New Covenant in My blood” (Luke 22:20), then we, too, are living a life towards bringing “the kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33) back into primary focus for the present day body of Christ. And we, too, are living, in our priesthood, in close fellowship and contact with our King and High Priest, so therefore we also can hear our Shepherd’s voice giving us wise counsel to protect His covenant, kingship and our priesthood.


One more blessing I see is this. These event’s in Zadok’s life took place hundreds of years before what we have been seeing in the book of Ezekiel lately concerning, in God’s Own direct words, the (still) faithful “sons of Zadok, who kept charge of My sanctuary when the sons of Israel went astray from Me, shall come near to Me to minister to Me; and they shall stand before Me” (Ezekiel 44:15).


The sons of Zadok were the last Levitical family standing, who did not forsake the covenant and their priesthood, as the other sons of Israel had. What a great example Zadok set for generations in his family.


Beloved child of God, do not be moved away from the New Covenant and your priesthood to your King, by the voices and attitudes of others who simply have never even known these things - these things which are most crucial to our living God. Instead, minister to God as a priest in His presence, live in His New Covenant, stay close to your King Jesus, and the Lord will reward your example, so that future generations may also know and be faithful to their King, covenant, and priesthood - all to the pure and full glory of God! Hallelujah!
