“For the law appoints men as high priests who are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints a Son, made perfect forever”
Hebrews 7:28
The writer of Hebrews referred to David’s prophetic Psalm 110 as “the word of the oath” six times in his letter (Hebrews 6:16-17, 7:20-21,28). The Old Covenant law could only appoint high priests who were “weak.” However the “word of the oath, which came after the law” has appointed Jesus Christ, God’s Son, as both “Lord” and “priest forever.”
Through His New Covenant blood, Jesus has been raised (Hebrews 13:20) and “made perfect forever.”
Earlier, referring to this, the author of Hebrews wrote, “they indeed became priests without an oath, but He with an oath through the One who said to Him, ‘The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind, You are a priest forever;’ so much the more Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant” (Hebrews 7:21-22, Psalm 110:4).
Jesus Christ, right now, is “perfect forever.” Jesus Christ, right now, is our perfect “Lord,” our perfect “High Priest,” and He has saved us forever through His perfect new and “better covenant.”
Our God is perfect and His salvation is perfect.
Let us know and come before God in His perfection. Yes, let us know and submit to Jesus, our “Lord,” more perfectly by acknowledging, learning of, and understanding all He has done for us. Let us submit to Jesus, our “High Priest,” gratefully, humbly, and joyfully. Let us enter God’s presence, to minister to our Lord as His “royal priesthood” (1st Peter 2:9) and actually be priests to our great High Priest.
Jesus Christ, in Himself, is the total fulfillment of “the word of the oath” of Psalm 110 and He has given us a “better covenant” so we may live forever with Him. He is both our “Lord” and our “priest forever.”
Live with your “Lord” and your “priest forever” this day so you may learn of Him. Jesus Christ, Himself, right now, is your “guarantee of a better covenant.”
Bless His holy Name. Hallelujah!
