The Lesser Is Blessed By The Greater

Today’s Word Of Encouragement From Wayne:

“The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind, You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizadek”

Psalm 110:4

God spoke this word through David, of a higher, permanent, priesthood to come, while the Levitical priesthood of the Old Covenant was still in effect. God was speaking through David of a future time in which Messiah would come and be “a priest forever according to the order of Melchizadek.”

The priesthood of Melchizadek, the writer of Hebrews explained, is higher than the Levitical priesthood, for many reasons. First, “Through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes, for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizadek met him.” And, “Without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater” (Hebrews 7: 9-10,7), thus establishing the superiority of the Melchizadek priesthood, which would come to fulfillment in Jesus Christ, over that of the Levitical priesthood.

Melchizadek predated the Old Covenant Levitical priesthood by hundreds of years. When Melchizadek met Abraham, in Genesis 14, Scripture says, “Melchizadek king of Salem (peace) brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High. He blessed him” (Vs. 18-19). Here we see Melchizadek, King of peace and Priest of God Most High, carrying bread and wine - the very elements of communion in our King and Priest, Jesus Christ, and he blessed Abraham.

So, the Old Covenant Levitical priesthood, still in the loins of Abraham, was not yet in existence when Abraham acknowledged the superiority of the New Covenant priesthood, to be brought to pass through Jesus Christ, our King and High Priest forever. As the writer of Hebrews also declared, “When the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also” (Hebrews 7:12).

“The lesser is blessed by the greater.” You and I are so blessed “by the greater,” through Jesus Christ, through His New Covenant, His new law, for He is now in this moment our High Priest “forever”of the New Covenant, a greater covenant in every way over the Old Covenant. Jesus Christ is our permanent, consistent, eternal High Priest. And we are His priesthood, now and forever.

“The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind” about Jesus Christ our King and Priest. Let us agree with God. Let us not change our mind on this matter. And let us not even attempt to change God’s mind on this matter. Instead let us joyfully be one with our High Priest today, by being His “royal priesthood,” just exactly as the New Testament declares of us (1 Peter 2:9), all to the true glory of God!

Yes, give thanks to your gracious “priest forever” in His presence, being His Own priest today. Hallelujah!
